To establish AI expertise and drive user engagement, Blick launched a series of AI features. Our approach was to deploy these features rapidly and refine them iteratively, using insights from user behavior to guide our development.

Creating a smart and instant news deep dive.
Challenge
Our initial chatbot interface failed to resonate with users, so we have pivoted to an AI-enhanced search experience that directly addresses user needs. The primary business goal is to drive higher page views, a challenge we are actively working on as we find that users do not yet explore beyond the initial search results.
Solution
Blick AI is designed to provide users with a summarized response from Blick articles, in addition to standard search results. This feature adapts the familiar Google/Gemini search experience for a news context. Context aware components in articles further motivate users to dive deeper into a topic and potentially explore more stories.
Impacts
10% increase in session duration when using the suggested questions feature
20% more page views for sessions using the AI-enhanced search
96% of MVP AI input interactions only entered a single query
All quantitative metrics have been anonymized or modified to protect sensitive business information.

Our user research indicated that sometimes readers are missing important content nuggets to fully understand ongoing stories. They then tend to bounce, because finding the initial reporting was too high an effort. With our AI question widget, we try to provide users with this missing content early so they can better understand the broader context and have a smooth reading experience.

We're exploring the TL;DR widget to improve the reading experience of our long-form article templates. Designed as a navigational and contextual aid for direct traffic users. User research from Scandinavian publishers found that short intro summaries boost article reading completion. With this feature, we experiment to increase session duration by giving readers a quick story overview.
